Many long-distance runners might recognize similarities between Gator-Bait Gaiters and other gaiter designs. Certainly, there exist consistencies. Yet while they seem "the same" at first glance, upon closer inspection they are different—fabric and toe-area choices to name two. A variety of strapless & Velcro attaching gaiters are available on line here and through other site below. With my gaiters I hope to appeal not only to runners but also to a broader "outdoorsy" audience of dog & fitness walkers and nature enthusiasts.
So, after purchasing two pairs of gaiters on-line, I was disappointed because they unfortunately fell apart too soon for my liking. I LOVED the playful fabrics but hoped for a different print than available and I needed a tougher & higher gaiter for my runs. With a trail marathon the upcoming weekend, I was in a pinch because they weren't taking orders for a few weeks. This led me to my sewing machine with some stretchy funky fabric I had, with innovations in mind and an aim to create a more rugged gaiter.
I developed my pattern and tailored it some more to suit my needs: a bit taller, thicker fabric around ankles, reinforced seams where needed and the ability to mix and match fabrics with the ribbon at the toe tip.
Why this Gator-Bait Gaiters blog?
I developed this site as more folks—both in and out side of the running community— asked me where I got my gaiters. When I told them I'd made them, they'd then ask if I would sew them a pair—for light hiking, walking dogs or through the woods, and for running. If this includes you and you would like me to sew you some custom Gator-Bait Gaiters, please check out the "Ordering & Fabrics" post on this blog spot and then contact me via this site &/or at extremilys@yahoo.com.
I wish to thank Dirty Girl Gaiters for inspiring me to improve upon a good idea. In my research for this post, I also found these gaiter sites: Joe Trail Man, REI, Running Funky, Race Ready, and Gear Zone.
